Didn’t Jamaicas whole sprint team also have a PED scandal? One where, mysteriously, Usain Bolt was the only one on the relay team who didn’t get caught?

I think there’s obviously a lot of PED use, and that not all “PEDs” are created equal. In some ways the banned substances protocol is too strict, in other ways it’s very easy to beat.

That female commentator is horrible.

The commentator's name is: Kara Goucher.

Kara Goucher a longtime successful women's distance-runner; full-White American; and largely a product of Duluth, Minnesota. She has an interesting story, representative of a type and a time. Her story overlaps with the ongoing Sailer interest in Minnesota -- as well as other Sailernalia -- so I give it here for those interested:

.

KARA GOUCHER FAMILY ORIGIN

- born July 1978, New York City, under the name "Kara Grgas." Croatian-origin father and a White mother with many generations of ancestry native to the USA, probably around half or more of colonial-origin.

- Kara's father, Mikro Grgas, was born in 1948 in Zablace, Sibenik [Dalmatia], Croatia, and arrived in the USA ca.1952, settling in Queens. The father became a star soccer player for Ottawa University, Kansas. He was "a three-time All-American" as of 1970.

- Kara's mother was born Patty Haworth in 1953, with some generations of family-ties to Kansas and more-recently Duluth, Minnesota. The mother was apparently of the usual Midwest NW-European stock; Protestant, largely Yankee ancestry (her paternal-side family-tree surnames include Haworth, Ott, Reed, Adams, Elliot; her mother's side has a Dutch surname and looks darker but probably is full-White). All this woman's relatives (Kara Goucher's maternal blood-relatives) are long-lived. Both parents living to their later nineties and a grandfather living to age 103.

- Kara Goucher's mother Patty Haworth, in late teens, met the soccer-star Mirko Grgas at the local Ottawa University, Kansas. This would be the early 1970s. They were married within a few years.

- Kara's family, after ca.1975 marriage, moved back to his father's semi-native place: they lived for years in the Lindell Hill neighborhood of Flushing, Queens, New York -- until a mid-1981 move to Waldwick, New Jersey. In July 1982, "her father was killed by a drunk driver on the Harlem River Drive." The drunk driver who killed him was a Black-male, age thirty, who lived in the nearby Grant Houses public-housing project. The killer, Gene Joseph, was able to serve only six months in jail in 1982-83, before returning to the Harlem 'projects.' Gene Joseph was possible of Caribbean origin (most Blacks with this surname seem to be from the Caribbean). So with a stricter immigration policy, he'd never have been in the USA. He could well still be in New York today, now in his early seventies.

- Soon after the father Mirko Grgas' death, the mother took her daughters to Duluth, Minnesota, her own native place. The mother eventually remarried (1985) to a Minnesota man named Tom Wheeler, whom she had met at a church. (Kara in her autobiography says that Tom Wheeler was "well regarded in the community, with family roots in the Duluth area stretching back to the nineteenth century. He worked in insurance and financial planning. He was a sports nut who had played hockey at Hamilton College..." -- We can expect stepfather Tm Wheeler, whom Kara says she generally liked, did everything to encourage and foster his stepdaughter's running talent.

.

KARA GOUCHER ADULT-LIFE PRO-RUNNING CAREER

- Kara graduated from high school in Duluth, June 1996.

- She attended all her school in Duluth, from K-12, ages 5 to 18. The 2000 census for the county in wbhich Duluth sits counted 200,000 residents, of whom: 95% White, 2% 'Native American', <1% Black,<1% Asian, <1% Hispanic, 1% mixed-race. In the hinterland thereabouts, you were likely to spend weeks or even months at a time without interacting with a nonwhite-immigrant-origin person.

- Kara attends the University of Colorado, 1996-2001. She graduated in May 2001 (BA, Psychology), but by this time she is focused on a pro-running career. At the University of Colorado, she met white-male distance-runner Adam Goucher.

- 2001: Kara marries Adam Goucher and takes his name;

- ca.2001-2014: Lived in Portland, Oregon; 2014-present, lived in Boulder, Colorado. The decision to move may be related to upcoming school-career of their son, Colt Goucher, born Sept 2010. With such elite-running parents, Colt Goucher could himself be a future 'Olympian' and Sailer-material. (Is 2028 Los Angeles too early? Colt Goucher would be 17, nearing his 18th birthday).

- From the early-2000s to md-2010s (from early-twenties and into her later-thirties), Kara Goucher was considered to be one of the top U.S. women's long-distance runners.

- She finished 6th in the April 2013 Boston Marathon. She finished early enough to be well-clear of the Chechen-caused blasts that day, which killed several finish-line spectators and injured dozens;

- ca. late 2010s: Kara Goucher began career as a color-commentator for running. Covered all the 2021 Olympics at Tokyo and now the 2024 Summer Olympics at Paris. She got very excited, while color-commentating, at the surprise silver-medal by Kenneth Rooks, white male (from the interior of Washington State).

.

THE POLITICAL or SAILERIAN LESSONS OF KARA GOUCHER

- Kara Goucher's family-story and life are evident enough: She is a usual product for her generation of 'Blue'-America in many ways. And also of classic-America. Not much of Woke post-America. She has genes favorable to success in sports and in life.

- Kara Goucher has taken pains in her life to stay away from the Diversity that killed her father in 1982. We see this with her choices to live in Portland (up to 2014) and Boulder, Colorado. And her choice to marry a full-White male. She has no interest of ever living in New York City, despite Croatian-origin relatives still there.

- Kara Goucher consistently speaks highly of Duluth, especially. Duluth's core-city and wider area were effectively all-White when she lived there in the 1980s and 1990s. She doesn't mention that part; but every time she has talked or written of her background, it's signaled all over the place.

- Someone like Kara Goucher is a good candidate for what Charles Murray was getting at with his posited class of people who live traditional lifestyles but either preach nontraditional or harmful lifestyles or ideas (Wokeness), or at least don't oppose such ideas. It's a complicated set of reasons why people like this carry such attitudes. Is it that they cannot imagine people failing to live lives as wholesome as their own? There are major class-like pressures here, too. Getting locked into a successful and happy world, they see others talking Wokeness and they say "I'd better keep quiet." But there is nothing in her lifestyle at all to suggest any true-belief in the Wokeness' precepts (of anti-White-Christian, anti-Heterosexual, anti-male politics).

- Kara Goucher's excitement about Kenneth Rooks in August 2024 seems a case of pride in the very-same type of which she herself is an exemplar. In other words, she'd not have been so excited if the winner were not a White-Middle-America male, but some ringer imported from some distant place.

- Kara Goucher's excitement at a white-U.S.-male victory in the 3000m steeplechase event, unprecedented in her lifetime, may be a case of "revealed preference"; it may reveal what lies behind the actual White-Christian elements of the Big-Blue coalition, which is NOT an ethnomasochism that we so often see some people signaling. We see this also seen in part through Tim Walz. He also a product of the very-similar places and currernts as Kara Goucher (Tim Walz: Nebraska and Minnesota, and NW-European Protestant; the same except Kansas and Minnesota for Kara Goucher, and some good sports-genes via Croatia).

Maybe she was excited about the American performances in the 10k and Steeplechase because she is an American?

Performance Enhancing Drugs really were (still are?) quite a booming business in horse racing according to a state of the art Testing Laboratory I had the privilege to audit about ten years ago (this Lab tested certified samples of race horse urine and blood). The Lab owned a shiny new mass spectrometer that was accurate to one part per trillion on the analyte of choice. I was looking for a one part per billion machine, so, this made my day.

The chain of custody, QA system, etc. were all transferrable to Nuclear Quality water testing, in this case with considerable margin.

It's a wonderful world.

On the women's 3000m steeplechase, 2016 to 2024, it was almost all Nilotics, 7 of 9, although 2 of those 7 represented "Bahrain"). The other 2 were White-U.S. women.

A combination of the political feminist imperative since the 1970s pushing girls in sports all through school-age, rich-country status, and high development of sports-training infrastructure, it's no surprise those non-Niloitcs who dosneak into victories in this event are from the USA (including the male white-American, Kenneth Rooks, 2024).

The victories of 2 of the 7 being from Bahrain point again to the disconcerting phenomenon of people of non-local origin taking medals for x country. Bahrain! The examples are many and tiring to recount.

In a Sailerian world, there might have to two adjustments to internatioanl sporting competitions:

(1.) separate runnings of events for people from different racial-groups (see Sailer's recent: "Who is the world's fastest non-Black man?"). Similar in principle to those amateur races offering groupings by sex and age-group for prizes. We already separate all sports events by sex, and for the same reason.

(2.) People should represent the nationality from which comes the racial-ancestry qualifying them into one category comes.

Admittedly, on the margins this causes some problems. But these are guiding principles. The alternative is Olympics and so on of the 2030s, 2040s, whenever, in which one racial-group dominates events wearing the nominal 'nationalities' of countries all over the world, thanks to Bahrain-style mercenary citizenship-offering.

Thanks for curating these track events Steve. I’m boycotting the Olympics due to their blasphemy and tranny boxers but I still need my track fix.

The boxers are probably intersex, not transgendered. They both probably believe themselves to be female, and a gross inspection of their anatomy would probably lead one to think they are women. (Albeit women who are not genetically blessed with great attractiveness, unlike, say, the Australian lady swimmers, who are quite fetching if Amazons don’t bother you.) The boxers are one of the few cases where the phrase “sex assigned at birth” actually makes sense.

ahh yes the incredibly tiny cohort of intersex people who are used by the left to promote the idea that sex is a spectrum. Shes a man man.

Expand full comment

It’s true that intersex people are a very small cohort. It’s also true that the left uses them to critique the “gender binary.” It is also true that this is stupid. But that doesn’t change the fact that this individual probably appeared female based on visual inspection, and this person isn’t being opportunistic like Lia Thomas. I feel sad for someone born intersex in Algeria.

I think it’s possible to not have any hostility toward this person, but also to recognize that fairness and safety mean the individuals should not compete.

This person was most likely exploited by Algeria to win an Olympic medal. I don’t feel bad for intersex people in Algeria because I don’t care about Algeria. A quick visual inspection from thousands of miles away tells me it’s a man man. You see Pete I’m an anti-islam bigot. “Je Sui Charlie”

Steeplechase seems to be a marquee event in N. Africa and an afterthought in the west.

The story of the Olympics however is that the Americans are getting medals and loading athletes into distance finals. This is new.

I think its possible that when everyone was more or less using the classic Lydiard training methods the Kenyans were winning because they have better natural aptitude for these events and it was hard for our outliers to match their outliers. It seems however there are lots of developments in optimal preparation of distance runners such as heavy low rep weight training and all sorts of cross training -- Are the Kenyans and Ethiopians up on these?

Expand full comment

Has the Lydiard training method been supplanted? I know it’s what my cross country and track coaches used back when I was running, ma y moons ago. Start with a distance base and gradually add in intervals. Do they not do that?

I watched the Marathon, and those times were insane. And on a brutal course. The two Americans were like eight and nine, but their times were jaw-dropping. Bill Rodgers and Frank Shorter would never have dreamed of those times. Is it all the shoes with carbon fiber in them, or is it better training?

I suspect you're right about the doping crackdown in Kenya. I also think there's been a big move of East African talent toward road racing (especially the marathon) in recent years. It's very hard to get into a Diamond League track meet unless you are really, really good. It's much easier to win prize money at a 2nd-tier marathon. Or even to do smaller 10ks, half-marathons, etc. that may give out prize money and not even test for drugs.
