I have an example! Not sure if there are quotas. Israeli Haredim are mostly Ashkenazi. Non-Haredi Jews are mostly non-Ashkenazi. There are "DEI" initiatives at Haredi integration.
Integration of Haredi women into high-tech in general is on the rise. High-tech attracts ultra-Orthodox women who are looking for high-paying professions, since in most cases they are the breadwinners in the family. According to results of recent assessment tests conducted in schools, the haredi girls also possess the skills: the ultra-Orthodox female students lead in math and in reading skills and are ahead of the secular and state-religious sector; they are also ranked second in sciences, not far behind the secular sector. Thus, if in 2022 there were 1,000 ultra-Orthodox girls who graduated the computer programs, this year, their number will rise to 1,300, and next year's forecast is 1,900; in addition, about 500 female graduates from colleges that grant B.Sc. degrees.
What is less known is that these ultra-Orthodox hi-tech women increasingly integrate into the defense industries and into high-tech systems in the defense arms. About 160 ultra-Orthodox women already work in the high-tech division of the police, also in key positions in development projects and in jobs defined as highly classified. In the Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), there are about 120 ultra-Orthodox women in high-tech positions, "and there may actually be more, because we don't label people according to their religious affiliation," says Sivan Hever, who is in charge of "Diversity and inclusion in employment" (hiring employees from diverse populations) at the company.
Interesting article. So Haredi are like lions. I'm not sure this is a good example since their test scores indicate they would be good at the tasks of the job. This is closer to "affirmative action" in the way Kennedy meant it when he (or his speech writer) coined it.
Fair. I would not be surprised if Haredi are actually better than the scores would predict, because if you factor out g they have a lot more of that but less of the non-g skills associated with test performance (the kind you get from having a proper secular education, and which probably influences science scores more), and probably g is what’s driving the job ability.
But granted they are doing well on tests. Other conventional metrics probably not so much. Another win for testing.
Trial judges set an extremely low bar; I remember reading of one case in which a judge spontaneously ordered a name change for a child named Messiah on the grounds that (1) Messiah is a title and not a name, (2) it is the title of only one person, and (3) that person is Jesus Christ. The judge was white.
if I am summing all the news and wikipedia and X fragments correctly, Letitia James is in danger of being sanctioned for bringing a ridiculous obviously political case against a major presidential candidate
Spike Lee and John Singleton did not benefit from DEI, so couldn't a case also be made that those specific examples (Coogler and Peele, and also McQueen) would've risen to the top without DEI in place?
Not a great example because people don't get into Hollywood by testing as smart. (Being too smart is probably disqualifying for an actor). They say "politics is show biz for ugly people." But the corollary is "Show biz is politics for dumb (attractive) people."
You have to be fairly smart to be a successful actor, I mean even just navigating the industry to become successful takes a clever person. But consider what acting actually is, you have to read a script, and create a model of a hypothetical person to inhabit. You need to have a well developed theory of mind for the job. Ofc there are different types of actors, who play different types of roles.
"There's been (not always unreasonable) criticism of female cops on the beat, but I suspect they've significantly improved how domestic violence complaints are handled. My intuition is they've probably also driven down police corruption/mistreatment of suspects."
Right, I'd want to have some women cops on the force to interview women and children victims. None of them are going to do well on the physical test.
In Steve Farron's book, The Affirmative Action Hoax, he points out that shoe-horning in women makes police forces less effective (Chapter 10). Beginning on page 283, he documented that mental ability tests generally predict higher achievement than non-whites perform to and lower achievement than whites perform to.
A few years ago I saw the Marriage of Figaro at the SF symphony all the singers were black except Cherubino (a comic pants roll) and Count Almaviva (the villain). I was a little nonplussed since I believed the other rolls were not necessarily chosen by merit. However, it turned out the best production I have seen (out of I think six or seven) and I really enjoyed it. So even if the singers were chosen for DEI reasons they were still awesome.
Opera has had non-realistic casting forever: lovelorn youths are played by 300 pound tenors, beautiful virgins by 200 pound 45-year-old sopranos. How you sing comes first.
So, opera has had colorblind casting for generations, with lots of famous black and other nonwhite singers such as Maori Kiri Te Kanawa. The main change during the DEI era is that the small number of nonwhite roles (Aida, Madame Butterfly, Turandot, etc.) must be played by nonwhite singers.
That's not a major problem for the big opera companies, but it's probably stressful for smaller budget companies to deal with issues like: does Madame Butterfly have to be Japanese? Can she be Korean? What if we find a good soprano we can afford who is half white, half Chinese? How about a quarter Filipinio? There are few written rules for this kind of thing, so you never know what is allowed or not or what will turn into a huge whoop-tee-doo online.
In general, my sympathies are with people trying to Put On a Show on a limited budget, so I'm fine with colorblind casting for opera and theater. For big budget historical movies, however, I want realistic-looking casting, although I'm fine with, say, Maori Cliff Curtis playing an Arab terrorist or a Mexican gang leader.
"The main change during the DEI era is that the small number of nonwhite roles (Aida, Madame Butterfly, Turandot, etc.) must be played by nonwhite singers."
Up to a point, Steve. Just saw a production of Turandot in Hong Kong this past weekend. The cast was mostly Asian, and you'd think that obviously Turandot would be one of them. In fact, Turandot was sung (alternating performances) by a Ukrainian and a Russian. I wonder if they shared a dressing room.
Anyway, Daughter Calvinist, who is a good amateur soprano herself, said she's been told by her singing teacher/other female singers here that the role of Turandot is too much for most East Asian sopranos -- they quietly acknowledge that it takes a toll that can wreck a singer who's not physically up for it.
The production here had great sets and staging, and was generally a lot of fun. But several of the male singers (particularly Ping, Pang, and Pong, all sung by Chinese singers, notably) just didn't have the oomph to project their voices up to the balcony where we were sitting.
I heard over 40 years ago when my mother volunteered in an opera head office that the difficulty of the title role was one reason Turandot was rarely performed by the company. The other was the original non-Puccini final half-act wasn't very good. Toscanini conducted the premiere and stopped the performance where the Maestro put down his pen. Some people might also be squeamish about the Chinese head chopping.
In the performance I saw, they dropped a curtain and projected on it an explanation that this was the point at which Puccini packed it in. Then up went the curtain, and they finished it off with the tacked-on ending, which is pretty bad.
Over the better judgement of Puccini himself & Toscanini, who preferred Ricardo Zandonai, GP's son picked that hack, Alfano.
There have been other attempts at the ending, including Luciano Berio (of all people), but they don't work, either. I think GP painted himself into a corner with Liu's self-sacrifice, which makes both Turnado & Calaf moral monsters (by E19 opera standards). So it takes a very dark triad perspective to enjoy the happy ending.
Longtime opera aficionada here. There have been almost no Chinese Turandots (the role has a notoriously high tessitura) but quite a few mixed-race Calafs, including a real Central Asian.
What about non-commissioned officers in the military? There are plenty of rules and training, but the leadership qualities that lead to success aren't so easily measured or as dependent on IQ. I'm sure there are still plenty of DEI-duds, and the long, hard push to have more diverse commissioned officers has likely harmed the non-com talent pool.
Beat. me to it. There are surprisingly few blacks in the military in the UK but it seems to be a much more attractive career for blacks in the US. Possibly because most of our blacks are from the Carribbean (up to 4 or 5 generations now) who lack a work ethic and patriotism in the main unlike African blacks from certain countries where the British empire loomed large.
Back in the 1990s, a couple of sociologists wrote a book, "All That We Can Be," about how for a generation or two now, African-Americans were well-represented in sergeant ranks of the U.S. Army.
During peacetime, its an easy job as a non-com. You get to bully new recruits for a few months and then send them off, you're not seeing bullets flying, and for the rest of the day you drink. My father told a story of being in when Vietnam was winding up and no new troops were being sent over anymore and all the sergeants would be line up the troops in the morning, then disappear for a while, and then be drunk by noon.
This can be seen from reports on sexual predation in the armed services, and you are right that the Deep State is hiding the statistics. Moreover, victims are disproportionately young, white women; another result seen from individual reports but hidden statistically.
Steve, not DEI related, but for your awareness there occurred another example of Sailer's Law yesterday. A shooting after the Tennessee State University (HBCU) homecoming parade left one killed and 9 injured.
What about media positions such as news co-anchors and reporters found on EVERY single local channel and many national network TV news shows these days? Also the the august and wise interviewer on shows like "60 Minutes" and the myriad "pundit" slots. These are fiercely competitive positions where the "skills" required to land spots are obviously heavily tilted by AA and DEI considerations. That said, many of the minority hirees appear to grow into the the position and become passably competent at their jobs, um, informing the public.
I'm sorry, but I see the women and American blacks on TV news and news analysis shows giving us partisan propaganda. Their competence at it varies, but the ethics are defective.
You're in the wrong country, critiquing the wrong industry, and wielding the wrong butterknife to complain about "defective ethics." Grow up. Freddie deBoer's "It's Got a Price" piece today is a good start on getting back your grip.
In law, many judges and juries will give implicit breaks to black lawyers arguing cases if the point is in any way debatable and the black doesn't screw up completely, especially in front of fellow commies or blacks.
Its part of the soft bigotry of low expectations/coddling of blacks mindset of communists. Since much of the law on low-level stuff is arguable and decided by humans based on feelings more than facts, a DEI black can get a bigger winning streak than non-DEIs on the mediocre cases. Which is why firms/DAs will trot out a black attorney to sit as co-counsel or make arguments on such cases, to keep winning streaks alive. A decent but mediocre black attorney who knows his limitations can get on a winning streak to rival Matlock if he chooses his cases well -- but on low level drug busts and convenience store robbery cases, not murder.
>>In most areas, whether professional or academic, once you get to a high enough level, where the organization can’t afford poor picks, affirmative action is allowed to run out.
That's the case in traffic control where I live. They talk about "diversity" in hiring, but if you look at who actually handle the roads, they're all Whites. Because this involves re-directing traffic, sending out repair teams while alerting ambulance and staying in contact with police. This is serious, so you can't have Affirmative Discrimination mess it up.
>>Republican primary voters like blacks more than blacks like being Republicans
Also called cuckservatives. Or Breitbart readers.
Look at Breitbart comments for an article involving race and you'll have the usual cowards gushing over Blacks, with the laughable "the South and the KKK were Democrats!" as if the parties would be the same now as generations ago. They lie for the sake of being anti-White. Of course, that's always the case. And when has that BS ever made Blacks vote Republican instead of voting for the party that gives them everything they want? The cucks aren't just cowards but also useless.
Back in 2015 these people supported Bush and Ted Cruz. You don't hear them talk about that now. They switched to Trump because Trump won the primaries, and cowards cling to whoever is in power. They gush over him as if he was an infallible savior, just like they did with Cruz. They'll repeat any Trump praise for a group of non-Whites, while never mentioning any anti-immigration policy. The only time they'll criticize non-Whites is when it's time to hate Palestinians, and then they let out their vilest side. Whenever the *media bosses tell you to do something, the cuckservatives will obey.
Before 1930s, Blacks did vote majority Republican, and Republican administrations filled token low/mid-level positions with Blacks. After 1865 and before loss of franchise some of Southern HoR Congressmen were also Black AND Republican.
DEI would only improve the quality of workers if irrational discrimination actually existed. One example where it worked was desegregating major league baseball.
Today, because irrational discrimination targets white men, DEI might improve quality by putting more white men in jobs like schoolteacher, HR, and possibly even professional sports.
I rather doubt DEI works anywhere except where it doesn't matter. After all when you purposely choose less merit over more you inevitably get less of the results you seek rather than more
This gets into a discussion very quickly of innate talent and proclivities. Blacks tend to do well in strict hierarchies with clear rules and emphasis on physicality. So smart, squared away blacks tend to make good military NCOs. But you don't need DEI for them because that's where they'll show up naturally. Of course, there's also a reason they call the military the big green welfare machine. I met a black man who'd been an MP and E-6 in the Air Force and he could barely read and was just slack, slack, slack.
Regarding law, I know a number of sharp black male law firm partners. But black women in particular seem baffled by legal reasoning and law practice.
Our host has made the point that a lot of fields are just brutal in general, like ballet dancer and Big Law and Mid Law partnership. Barack Obama took one look at that and decided to go into politics instead. I wouldn't encourage anyone in either endeavor. After that it's Shit Law and you might as well be in a cube farm or retail instead.
Plaintiff personal injury is lucrative but what used to be unethical is now standard practice. The most stone-cold mercenary, sleaziest people I know are personal injury lawyers.
If they were competent to begin with, we wouldn't need DEI. The results are exactly as one would expect. Something to keep in mind when looking for a physician as most blacks were admitted to medical school for racial quota reasons and the medical school system has been redesigned to keep blacks from failing out.
It is my theory that smart blacks tend to gravitate toward "civil rights" and "community activist" hustles where they are not judged because the very nature of the job insulates them from any serious critique,
I reject the assumption that corporations are good at discerning who is good at his job, especially in high level executive positions. I've seen many incompetent (at least incompetent to the job) whites and Indians in leadership positions for inexplicably long periods of time, given chance after chance, and absurd benefit of the doubt. If you are a C level executive your main tasks are vision, direction, communicating with other C levels and important customers, and making sure the level below you are performing. I think some minority of top people in big companies are very good, while most of them get judged for what happens while they are standing there (and of course how they look and speak, especially publicly)
Having for years observed the number of incompetent people maintaining employment at all levels, I've recently wondered if blacks don't have a point-- that they could do just as shitty a job for the money as most of the white people.
Perhaps my standards are too high and I underestimate just how incompetent a person can be.
I agree. It has been my experience of many years in the labor force that HR departments and department managers do the best they can, but still hire and promote to a large extent at random. They might be working almost entirely at random. One of the reasons I avoided management for the most part was to avoid that frustration.
I have an example! Not sure if there are quotas. Israeli Haredim are mostly Ashkenazi. Non-Haredi Jews are mostly non-Ashkenazi. There are "DEI" initiatives at Haredi integration.

"So we saw a lot of black women getting promoted to high ranking executive positions,"
e.g. The current US Vice-President, being chosen by Team Biden in '20, after crashing and burning spectacularly in her own party's primaries.
"So, are there fields where those hired via DEI privileges regularly outperform, as predicted by the conventional wisdom?"
Oh, sorry. Key words were "REGULARLY outperform" as predicted by the conventional wisdom?
Nix that example then as an example of a strictly DEI hire that has REGULARLY outperformed as predicted.

Yes, but black judges and prosecutors in general?
I remember the black judge made a hash of the Scooter Libby trial (but not as bad as Ito).
Trial judges set an extremely low bar; I remember reading of one case in which a judge spontaneously ordered a name change for a child named Messiah on the grounds that (1) Messiah is a title and not a name, (2) it is the title of only one person, and (3) that person is Jesus Christ. Needless to say, it would be hard to issue a judgment that's easier to get overturned.
"Now you listen here. He's not the Messiah. He's a very naughty boy."

It might be random or it might be us individual contributors just don't know what function they are trying to maximize (or minimize)
