Steve, I'm glad Elvis isn't around to see this. He's probably rolling in his grave at what's become of his city.

> Such actions, the report [and the NYT] said, drove up racial disparities between ¡Black! and white residents. The federal analysis found that the PD was 21% more likely to cite ¡Black! drivers than white drivers for driving violations, and 17% more likely to arrest or cite ¡Black! people for drug-related offenses.

It's a good thing that the report and article date from the Sixties, when it was still possible to imagine that ¡Blacks! and whites broke the law at similar rates.

What will reporters Emily Cochrane and Shaila Dewan make of the Age Discrimination that is revealed by citations for turnstile-jumping (15-24 versus octogenarians)? And wait till they learn about the Sex Discrimination that causes cops to prefer rape charges against men more often than women.

Related: Cochrane's and Dewan's jobs are safe. 15 of the article's 19 comments were written to support the Sailer Stereotype view of NYT subscribers, and their easily-slighted amour propre.

First, that the Justice Department is writing reports about the Memphis police demonstrates that the Justice Department is filled with leftist lawyers with leftist political agendas. If the Trump Administration can't fire these left-wing lawyers, they should just be placed in rooms with nothing to do but look up at the ceiling. Scuttle the whole Civil Rights division and let them do nothing for four years.

As for Memphis itself, the people of Memphis are getting the police department they wholeheartedly want. The city is two-thirds black and blacks have all the political power in the city. Let them enjoy their political power good and hard. Memphis is no longer civilized. The 28 % of the population that are white are fools to live in such a hellhole.

I recall that Washington DC had a similar problem, and it was discovered that a pretty substantial share (something like 20 percent) of black cops on the force had criminal records. In my experience, black cops don't worry about upsetting black citizens when it comes to their behavior as much as white ones do, and many really dislike the lower class blacks they have to constantly deal with and make no bones about it.

That said, Memphis is correct to reject the consent decree the DOJ is trying to railroad them into. It might be a dysfunctional city with not very competent police, but local control is better than having the feds looking over your shoulder.

Imagine being a white man and so desperate for work, you'd try to join the Memphis PD.

I don't know what white man would want to be a Memphis cop. Perhaps Memphis has an excellent retirement package for police.

Since blacks commit about ten times more violent crimes than other races, it makes sense that black cops commit about ten times more violent crimes than other cops.

Only 19 comments (very low) but one writes:

>No one wants to address the real issue-Rampant criminality among your men of color, 15-40 yrs if age.

What’s makes many cities unlivable, are these very men.

No one wants to admit it, but that’s the problem!

"In the 19th paragraph, the New York Times finally gets around to mentioning that the police chief is a black lady, and in the 23rd paragraph that the 5 cops who beat the black guy to death are black too." The NYT staff were hoping we wouldn't notice.
