This is Evan Vucci relaxing. He is the Associated Press photographer who is presently being credited with the instantly famous Iwo Jima-level photo of Trump arisen:
Vucci looks like a serious guy, the kind who runs toward the target of an assassin to get his picture.
A basic saying of the best photojournalists is attributed, perhaps apocryphally, to Weegee: “"f/8 and be there." In other words, don’t worry about the perfect technical settings, just set your camera for the middle of the normal range (of course, modern electronics now takes care of most of that for you), but be there. Even if bullets are flying, get yourself to the perfect position.
Still, I count four photographers beneath the stage snapping away by the time Trump walks away. Vucci appears to have gotten to the best available position, but the other three could still have well ended up with the historic shot.
For example, Doug Mills of the New York Times got the remarkable photo of a bullet whizzing by Trump’s head:
Mills is in his mid-60s and has been covering the White House since 1983.
Also shout out to Doug Mills, who captured the bullet whizzing mid-air right by Trump’s face, 1/1000000 odds
NYT didn't send me an email news alert until 9:40 pm, 3.5 hours after the shooting. They didn't use that photo, instead one with his fist raised. I'm not a paid subscriber.
I just realized all the SS agents around him are wearing the same color blue he is, just for moments like this.
