Those were more serious times, which is why a book like "Ulysses" was required to demonstrate one's intellectual heft.

I'm not sure being "serious" is a good thing in this case. Ulysses is basically pretentious crap that literati read to show they're more "sophisticated" than the rubes who want such plebeian things as excitement and entertainment from their literature.

Marilyn should have included a bookmark, but her expression is appropriate for the material.

My English major college roommate was the only one in his class to get through it.

Marilyn Monroe, from what I've read (would have liked to have known her but I was just a kid), had a genius level IQ. I very much doubt this is true of LeBron James or Gavin Newsom.

Marilyn was a voracious reader and hated the stereotype of the dumb blonde which persists to this day.

Here's a list of all the books she owned based on the Christie's auction of her personal property, more than 400 volumes. She actually owned a copy of Ulysses, very likely the one in the photo shared by Steve. To me, the books look like those a person who habitually reads would have, not a selection to place on bookshelves to impress visitors.

People like cheerful people, LBJ ain't cheerful.

Since Marilyn is the only one of the three who can actually read, she gets the nod. Showing herself reading the end of the book instead of the first page suggests she’s also the only one of the three who can think.

If LeBron has higher character than Jordan, it is only marginally higher. There was the hate hoax at his L.A. house. Right now he is forcing the Lakers to give a roster spot to his son, who isn't close to a NBA caliber player and was a borderline college one. LeBron's personal issues have been better shielded from the media, a practice that has improved since Jordan played where he mostly relied on reporters just not wanting to cross him and NBC paying his buddy Ahmad Rashad to cover the Bulls.

Marilyn by a landslide. She's far more fetching than the other two.
