I could not finish listening to the B & R podcast about this because Tracing Woodgrains has such a terrible voice for radio ( he may have a career ahead in pictures, have never seen him)
But it was hilarious listening to Jesse Singal feel obliged to stick to his “terfs are big meanies” principles and use she and her over and over again for a murderous cult of ultra violent transhumanist nerds who owned a tugboat, several box trucks, and a samurai sword collection
…. Just like Cosmo has been recommending for decades to every ambitious single career gal, SO cliche
singal had to feel the humiliating absurdity in every breath but godammit he painted himself into that corner and he was gonna pretend to be comfortable in it
I am also perplexed by "leaving him with a samurai sword impaled on his chest" as normally I would think of the chest as the thing impaled by the sword and certainly 'in' would make more sense than 'on'. But in this topsy-turvy world of men who are women, why can't Samurai swords be helpless victims of chests? You and I know not the lived experience of the katana, trying to make it as an oriental item in an America that fetishized it.
But seriously, the tugboat!?!?! How? Why? What for?
From the final paragraph of the Feb. 8th article by Matt Osborn (that guy):
"Whatever happens next, the American public will be more skeptical than before. As I wrote earlier this week, the [Zizian transgender death cult] case could become a watershed by forcing news organizations to confront the gap between their style guides, which are written by the gender lobby, and the demands of news consumers who have learned to distrust them."
If NYT reporters Tumin and Christobeck stooped to reading Substack, I'd ask them to explain the high ethical and journalistic standards that figure so prominently in their bios, again.
I am not in the least surprised that this cult emerged out of Seattle's post-humanist milieu.
The cults spawned in the Bay Area in the 70s at least had some residual spiritualism, but I guess soaking in the darkness in Seattle saps all that away, leaving only some "rationalist" core that, naturally, results in an ideology that is totally detached from reality, and completely, indisputably insane.
I started college in the mid 80’s in Seattle. All of the classmates I know from then are very conservative today. I don’t understand how the landscape changed so radically in Seattle or exactly when it began. I half jokingly think the grunge wave altered their brains out there.
The Wall Street Journal also covered the story using “she” pronouns for the Zizians. The article had comments enabled (NYT didn’t) but had a note I’ve never seen before saying that all comments would be reviewed before publishing.
I guess readers were being mean to the poor murderous Zizians!
I also noted in the WSJ article that even as their group of rationalist associates became increasingly alarmed by LaSotas behavior it was still considered morally wrong to not use the pronouns he favored in their discussions about him.
This Zizian group is so complex that even Sherlock Holmes would get confused trying to figure them out. I know I can't figure them out and don't really want to. They deserve to be executed but they almost certainly won't. They might not even be imprisoned. California and Vermont don't believe in rough justice. And Pennsylvania is suspect.
I find it ironic that my favorite liquor store is in Allegany County, MD. I could have crossed paths with these vegan, transgender freaks. I certainly didn't see them at Long John Silver's as they don't believe in killing and eating fish.
If the NYT outright called 'em she and her and dame and broad, the average reader might infer their transitude from how shooty and stabby they were. Can't have that.
BTW autocomplete, now energized with AI, is the enemy of humorous writing. When I was young it would at least ask if you wanted to make your prose more predictable and bland. Now it just assumes.
Tumin and Christobek are the reporters I'd imagine the NYT would assign to this case, only more so. They probably want to tell a less turgid version of this rather pedestrian story. If only they had more material to work with. Or had read Aella, last month.
As someone in this field, it's interesting that no matter the crimes or the psychology, they still self select for themselves through the commission of minor offences, such as the violations that generated the tragic stop with the Border Patrol.

A tugboat? Now you have my attention.

Let me explain… no, there is too much. Let this guy sum up:

wow. You just saved me from buying a tugboat.

I can adapt to nearly any speaking voice but I gave up with Trace.
Singal handled the gender identity stuff well. There is no way to get this right.
Who could ever imagine that trannies could be mentally ill or psychopathic? Astonishing!

Only Steve could have written this.
Ann Coulter had a good chat with Andy Ngo about this band of righteous criminals.

Call them freaks and you don't have to go the he/she route.
I also noted in the WSJ article that even as their group of rationalist associates became increasingly alarmed by LaSotas behavior it was still considered morally wrong to not use the pronouns he favored in their discussions about him.
Why not put "she" pronouns in quotes?

The Daily Mail seems to be only referring to one of the cult as trans. Their pics give it away.

Fun facts about Tumin, from her carefully-curated online presence: She's a foodie, and wrote for the (Martha's) Vinyard Gazette for four years.
After law school, Christobek was an Asst. D.A. for nine years. Quaintly, she still has "she/her" accompany her girly LinkedIn profile photo.
As someone in this field, it's interesting that no matter the crimes or the psychology, they still self select for themselves through the commission of minor offences, such as the violations that generated the tragic stop with the Border Patrol.
To my read, the Daily Mail and the New York Post appear to be the only news outlets practicing actual journalism.
At least the LA Times story put the trans word in the third paragraph.
