I'm not going to bother getting an account, paying or otherwise, at The Atlantic so does he ever get around to explaining how a 500-year-old map from a Spanish conquistador led to Emmett Till's death?

A lot of verbiage about colonialism, etc.:

“The map had been repaired carefully along its central fold. There’s a water stain in the gulf and an ink stain in southern Louisiana. It’s beautiful with its delicate copper lines.

“I just sat for a long time and stared. Everything that would happen in or near that oval was set in motion when it appeared empty on a map: the lynching of Emmett Till, the murder of three civil-rights workers in 1964, the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968. The dominant urge of the Industrial Revolution was to fill every space on every map with people who could extract resources and multiply wealth.”

LOL. I looked him up. He writes for ESPN.

I'll wager he said nothing about Faulkner, most of whose works are set in his imaginary and unspellable county in that part of Mississippi.

Wasn't the dominant urge of the industrial revolution to make stuff using steam power? I don't think any of the participants were consciously trying to break the record for filling in space on an antique Spanish map

Steve Jobs’s money is being wasted.

If only it were being wasted, as on yachts, mansions, and lavish parties. Instead it's being invested in social destruction.

This is intersectionality in action! Intersectionality means that every fixation of the left is joined at the hip with every other fixation of the left. So, maybe we used to tell you that the Emmett Till case was about white supremacy in the Jim Crow South. But when you think about it intersectionally, it turns out it's ultimately about settler-colonialism. (And the Jews probably did it.)

Expand full comment

Well the Jews did do it, but that has nothing to do with "leftism" unless like a basic birch neo-con you are going to call Uncle Adolph a leftist?

Frankly, your sounding rather like a leftist yourself.

Had Emmett Till survived, he would have immediately filed a complaint with the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice (admitted anachronism) maintaining that, above all else, what really bothered him was that the crazy whiteys insisted on touching his hair.

Speaking of the DOJ and the Left's insane interpretation of history that they call "the truth", the article reminded me of something Meritless Garland once said at some Hearing, or Panel, or whatever. That the DOJ was founded to protect blacks and fight white supremacists.

And all this time I thought the DOJ was established to handle the legal business of the country, and that anything and everything white - pre-Woke - was supremacist, including and especially the governement. Oh well. Live and Learn. Or, rather, Live and Unlearn and Obey.

No Thanks!

Sometimes I find this sort of grievance obsession annoying. Other times I think that for once whites could learn something from blacks.

"Other times I think that for once whites could learn something from blacks."

Like what?

Do you think whites will ever be awarded minority status like blacks are? Never. In fact, even blacks are beginning to lose that status, to Latinos, and not just Latinos.

In any event, whites will be minorities. Globally they already are. And we live in a Global World. But they will NEVER be minorities with rights - ever.

Orwell once wrote about "the power of facing unpleasant facts."

Certainly one unpleasant fact is that, barring a miracle, and it would take one at this point, the 21st century is going to be miserable for most (if not all) whites. Though I think it's going to be just plain miserable for more and more people, including the hostile elite.

The explanation for this being that replacing whites as the world's Designated Scapegoat is not just going to lead to Steve's "circular firing squad" among the Coalition of the Fringes, but that the Coalition will organize Death Squads against the hostile elite. And it will happen when the Coalition realizes that The Great Replacement really means replacing whites as the next Designated Scapegoat. History might have a Joker up its sleeve just yet. It very well may be.

White liberals have such an intense, bizarre and bottomless fetish for black pain and suffering the only thing I can think to compare it to is how Christian peasants used to line up to touch a sliver of the "real Cross" or to see the Virgin's face in a water stain. And I guess the purpose is the same: to feel righteous and holy, to feel the warm embrace of the saints and angels, to know that God is on your side and that you'll be in Heaven one day savoring thoughts of your wicked neighbors burning in Hell (with their Heaven being "the right side of History"). I think this is also why they can no longer discuss even the weather without breaking out with Racist!—it is absolutely fundamental to their self-image and as necessary as leaving the house with pants on for them to be seen and known as The People Who Love Blacks. They are like Ned Flanders when he sees a cross except with them it's anything resembling a noose, from a rope in a garage to one being used for pull-ups.

Mrs Steve Jobs should team up with the Super Friends of Antiracrism—Kendi, DiAngelo, Hannah-Jones, Roxane Gay—and start selling strands of Emmit Till's noose and George Floyd's socks and underwear: What do you get for the rich white liberal who has everything?

Have any of the Ivy League universities yet opened a Department of Emmett Till Studies? Perhaps it could replace journalism as a major, as actual journalism is no longer in demand, while writing about Emmett Till would guarantee long-term employment.

Much like humanities PhD theses, every time you think the subjects can't get any goofier, they do!

Of course, it would be impolite to point out that there are thousands of "Emmitt Tills" a year in the U.S., but they're killed by blacks and not Whites.

As a Mississippian, I resent this. But am used to it. Not long ago, I had to endure a Chicago native’s tone deaf rant about his hatred of the small college town of Oxford, MS… according to him, one can FEEL the EVIL of our sordid past in the atmosphere! The dark history seeps from our very buildings! I wanted to laugh, because I assure you, more black Americans are murdered in Chicago WEEKLY than have ever been killed in the small town of Oxford. But please, carry on… we’ll continue to play scapegoat so the rest of the country can cling to an illusion of a moral high ground…

After my grandmother's death, we discovered her long time (black with freckles) maid's maiden name was Thompson, also that of my grandfather's mother. An awkward claim-kin moment followed, but Thompsons were early settlers of these parts, so it's been a common name for over a century.

Hands down your best Emmett Till title. That one's going to be hard to beat.

Let's Face It! They're no good at managing the considerable power they have today.

So they're going to lose it tomorrow. Which is why they obsess over yesterday.

Or, to be more precise, their interpretation of yesterday. Which is as shallow as it is threadbare and monolithic (though that doesn't keep them from calling it "the truth", and using their power to force everyone else to call it that too, or else).

That they're going to lose that power is the only bright spot in their dismal reign. Though, it has to be said, that "tomorrow" can't come soon enough. But it'll come. In fact, it's coming as we speak.

I mean, just look around.
