Who on Team Trump wanted to bomb Iran for Israel?
America has avoided getting militarily entangled with Israel, but some in the Administration want that to change.
Donald Trump’s first term military actions were reasonably reasonable: He crushed ISIS, the single most vile entity on the world stage since the Khmer Rouge. But he also avoided most marginal wars, like Obama’s attack on Libya (which Obama himself regretted and late in his second term blamed on Hillary) or Bill Clinton’s attack on Kosovo, much less GW Bush’s disastrous invasion of Iraq.
But in his second term at his advanced age (he’s several months older than Joe Biden at the same point in their terms), Trump has been bellicose, implying that he’s considering military action against … Denmark.
Fortunately, that kind of thing probably won’t happen. Same for invading Canada. But, still …
Fortunately, Trump apparently put the kibosh on plans to attack Iran in conjunction with Israel. From the New York Times news section:
Trump Waved Off Israeli Strike After Divisions Emerged in His Administration
Israel developed plans for attacking Iranian nuclear facilities that would have required U.S. assistance. But some administration officials had doubts.
Julian E. Barnes, Eric Schmitt and Maggie Haberman reported from Washington. Ronen Bergman reported from Tel Aviv.
April 16, 2025
Israel had planned to strike Iranian nuclear sites as soon as next month but was waved off by President Trump in recent weeks in favor of negotiating a deal with Tehran to limit its nuclear program, according to administration officials and others briefed on the discussions.
If you’ll recall the Gulf War of 1991, the GHW Bush Administration very much didn’t want Israel’s involvement.
