The D's have been complaining for years about not having a deep bench. Biden is just part of that. The D's strategy since the 1960s was unite-the-clans under a Hate Whitey-Blame Whitey-Destroy Whitey mindset, but they needed some kind of whites at the top to make sure white Boomer D's still turned out. The D's Hunt for the Great White Male Straight Candidate has been increasingly fraught with each subsequent election as white straight males realized they were the targets of the D's and old D's died off. And there aren't many minority milquetoast front men like Obama, who aren't stupid, will just read off the teleprompter and sounds like a book reviewer -- in other words, white front men in minority skin suits. Most of the D's upper level minorities look and sound like what they are -- affirmative actioned emotionally unstable blacks, man hating feminists, ghetto communist Hispanics, fruity unmanly corrupt homosexuals with human trafficking links, Asians and Jews more loyal to their home nations than America, Muslims interested in pushing Sharia law, etc. They're losers as Big Tent Party leaders.
Biden offered that old white D image to old Boomers, so that always helped the brainless controlled dementia patient to stay in the national game. Gone are the days when a laughable joke like Biden could be dismissed as there were plentiful other competent acting white guys for the D's to pick from. Nowadays, he and Bill Clinton are literally the last ones left.
The only guys on the bench are the likes of colossal failure-but-still-looks-good-on-paper Gavin Newsome --who, as you've pointed out, is no spring chicken, despite his plastic surgery.
I stand by my prediction that the D's cease to be a viable national party after the 2028 election. Quite simply, once the last competent-seeming white straight males leave the party leadership, it will descend into a free-for-all as every minority group seeks to grab power. Once one does, the others will exit, since the minority group on top will exert a spoils system to dole out the top spots and grafts to their group and freeze out the others.
With no more vanilla frosting, the party will be seen as what it is: a shit sandwich. And no one will want to eat it. By 2032 no one will think the D's can field a serious national candidate. They will be a regional party at best.
Having fled the former California in 2018 after happily being a part of the Golden State for 40 years, the view from exurb Texas indicates a generational change in public morality, fiscal soundness, and that elusive‘quality of life’ metric.
Friends financially trapped there, and their children, long to escape to another State (anecdotal, not numbers).
The Church is similarly moribund (In affecting public opinion, again numbers).
The ‘California Republican Party’ is clearly moribund (numbers).
Infrastructure is quantitatively poorer than 40 years ago. Numbers.
How is this relevant to the Diversity thought?
The naked truth appears to be the profound error that inheres in the Diversity idea itself.
